I used to feel really guilty about screen time but at the end of the day, if the kids are happy then I am happy. And when itâs January being happy has to be a priority. There are more mental health issues in January than any other month in the year, so in all honesty, do whatever works for you.
February
(Anyone else need to spell out âFebruaryâ in your mind before you type it out? Or sing the alphabet to figure out what letter comes after J? Good, glad itâs not just me. Anyhoo â¦)
Half-term â again
Feb â ru â ary is here and oh, look at that, itâs half-term. Again.
Iâm still getting over the stress of Christmas and yet here we are again, with kids off school for a week. Whether you take time off work (if you work) or not, you still have to find activities for your children to do that donât consist of hours on the iPad or cost a fortune. Which, letâs face it, is nigh-on impossible these days when even just a simple outing to the cinema will put you back £40.
And itâs not just the expense of said cinema trip. There is the stress of my toddler not sitting still at all but instead wanting to ride the escalator up and down and up and down and up and down outside in the foyer, whilst my boys keep running out of the cinema to see if I am still there. We all leave the film with anxiety and stress levels at an all-time high, and I wonder why I just didnât make my own popcorn at home and throw on Netflix.
What Iâve learnt is, generally, when your children are small, what you imagine will be a lovely day out with them actually wonât be plain sailing, rainbows and butterflies, but more like a car crash, and canât wait to get home from your museum day out in London and wonder why you thought your kids would be interested in the toys that you played with in the eighties. (It was great nostalgia for me, but what on earth was I thinking?)
